Aberdeen Offshore Windfarm Awareness:
Aberdeen beach front looking north towards the planned development; a typical large offshore windfarm of wind turbines; and a map of the proposed windfarm
Public Warning: this is a NEARSHORE, not an offShore development proposal!
This windfarm proposal plans to mount turbines as close as 800m from the shoreline, with their blades reaching 150m into the skyline! If you include a conservative 500m safety exclusion zone, parts of the coastline may become unusable for water sports enthusiasts, not to mention unsightly (unless your idea of a dream location is something from a bladerunner / madmax movie!)
Why is the windfarm proposed so close to the coast? The answer is likely to be mainly cost, since longer distances and increased water depth would increase the cost of the power plant. However, in England and Wales the DTI have advised new offshore windfarms to be located many kilometers offshore. Currently the closest UK offshore windfarm is 3Km from the coast. This development could be bad for Aberdeen in terms of a detrimental disturbance to wildlife, recreation, the natural skyline, and yes even your house prices!
We are not against renewable energy, or even offshore windfarms. Neither is this a NIMBY site (Not In My Back Yard!). However it must be realised that there are high commercial rewards up for grabs, being offered by the government to help the UK meet the 1997 Kyoto agreement (to reduce greenhouse gasses by 10% by 2008-2012). Thats fine and well meant, but the proposed developments should be carefully planned, causing minimal impact to the enviroment and well being of local citizens, NOT just fill the shareholders of energy companies eager pockets. But such is the reality of the world we live in - unless you show you care! Therefore PLEASE read the proposal from AMEC , read our thoughts and links to other informational sites, and decide what you think is best. Feel free to email us any ideas comments. Thanks for reading.

Our Info and Comments on the windfarm:
Our aim here is to raise awareness of members of the public, so that they can be actively and correctly involved in the consultation and planning stages of the proposed windfarm off the aberdeenshire coastline (site under development - last updated 13/5/2005)
